"The student did not make the connection that he could use the answer to the first problem (354 + 249) to solve the second problem (354 + 250) quicker. It was not obvious to him that the first number in both problems was 354 and the second number differed only by 1. Instead of reworking the entire problem he could have just added 1 to the sum of the second problem (354 + 250). Instead of seeing if he could use the previous information he assumed it was an entirely different problem and started from the beginning."
