The Inert Knowledge Dilemma

A second dilemma is the problem of inert knowledge or lack of transfer of learning. We know that knowledge and skills learned in one situation often do not transfer to new contexts in which they are relevant (Salomon and Perkins, 1989; Bransford and Schwartz, 1999). Even when students seem to have a reasonable grasp of the subject, they have difficulty transferring newly-learned ideas to new situations.
