It is important to note these proposals might in fact improve children's learning. A child who focuses on the major ideas in a text is more likely to learn those ideas than one who does not attend to them. Moreover, a child who is interested in a subject is more likely to invest effort in learning it than one who has no interest. However, these proposals are not based on the material students read and studied in my class—they come from somewhere else. My guess is that these ideas originated in students' previous school experiences and their prior conceptions of learning and reading. |
