Arlene could tie the theme into a concept which was more relevant to the students, such as a current event, a popular culture theme or situation in which the students had a positive and emotional response. This, I believe would peak (sic) the students' interest and curiosity and cause them to be more interested in the topic.

 

To make learning more fun Arlene could have the students go home and read the chapters, then the following day have them work in groups with the list of questions and follow up in a class discussion. One more idea would be to have a group quiz, such as by playing a game. I think students learn better if they are having fun in learning.
