RESPONSE TO QUESTION 4 ON THE SUPPLEMENTAL COURSE EVALUATION

A number of different aspects of the course were identified as contributing to student learning and mathematical development. These were:

Working in groups

Opportunity to see other students' approaches and solutions to problems

Breadth of areas from which the problems were drawn

The difficulty of the problems

Large selection of problems

Time in class to work on problems

"Withdrawal" of the instructor from the solving of problems

Student-to-student explanations

Freedom to make own choices about what problems to work on.
