The Midterm

The Halfway Point

The midterm was the only timed test given in the course. The goal of the midterm was to get the students to think about putting together everything that they had done so far in the course and to get the students to think about their learning. Whenever I give a test in an undergraduate course, I try to give the students some type of study guide/sample test. I do this for several reasons. If a midterm is intended to get the students to look at the course as a whole, then I want to direct how they do this. Consequently, giving them a study guide allows me to direct their studying. I also give out a study guide to provide students an equal footing for studying for the course. At Bowling Green, I have a reputation, and I want the students that haven't had me for a course before to understand what I am likely to look for on the test. Finally, giving the students a study guide lets me double the amount of work that they do for the midterm. Usually students will prepare answers for all questions on the study guide, and after the test, I always ask the students to rewrite the test so that they are forced to think about what they have done wrong.
