The greatest challenge in my academic career has been to teach effectively in a large lecture environment. In 1997, increasingly frustrated with teaching General Chemistry in a traditional lecture format, I desperately sought an alternative approach – one that promoted active learning and deeper understanding for my students. I redesigned one of the General Chemistry sections and began engaging students in structured cooperative learning activities.
