I served as a student representative to the Faculty Search Committee in 2003-2004.  From the start I was made to feel an equal contributor, and my opinions as a student advocate were always respected.  At the same time, being new to this process, I was always comfortable asking for clarifications on issues that I did not understand.   As a result, I contributed to a successful faculty search both as an individual and as a representative of the GSC.  On a more personal level, my service to this committee and to the GSC in general is an integral part of my graduate training.  The act of working as part of a team- interacting with faculty and students from diverse disciplines- perpetuates the environment of mutual respect that is essential to intellectual community here at MSU.
