Documenting student learning in outcomes-based education
School of Information Technology and Communications Design, CSU Monterey Bay
Senior students in the School of Information Technology and Communications Design used the KEEP Toolkit to create individual learning portfolios that represent the skills and knowledge required to fulfill their outcomes-based education.
In the Spring of 2004, students in Professor John Ittelson's Senior Capstone Project Planning course had the opportunity to use the KEEP Toolkit to create their individual learning portfolios (ILPs). One of the major goals of this work is to encourage students to document and reflect upon their learning experience and make this knowledge explicit not only to themselves, but also for their instructors, their family, and their prospective employers. "Students who used the KEEP Toolkit for this work were able to quickly put things together and create working drafts of their ILPs," said Professor Ittelson. "Seeing this work as it developed enabled me to provide prompt feedback and to guide the students to reflect deeper into their learning. This cycle of reflection and mentoring was greatly faciliated by the toolkit's ease of use and just-in-time presentation." This experience has led Ittelson to conclude that introducing the KEEP Toolkit earlier in the academic careers of his students will enhance the quality and usefulness of their ILPs. "I would like to encourage students to start using the KEEP Toolkit in their junior year," said Ittelson. "By the end of their senior year, they will have developed a vital record of their learning experience and trajectory."
