CSM WAC Progress Log

On 3/10/06, after numerous meetings with President Shirley Kelly, VPI Mike Claire, Dean Susan Estes, and our ILP group, we submitted our proposal to Carnegie for the Campus Leadership Program. Writing the proposal forced us to think through our plan in detail as well as to quantify it with a budget.

On 3/23/06, we met at 8 a.m. with Mike Claire and explained our vision of Integrative Learning as a signature of CSM and the need for an Integrative Learning Center that would consolidate various programs under its aegis.

At lunch the same day we presented our proposal to Ralph Lane. He seemed both interested in and impressed with our ideas, asked many insightful questions, and revealed his own understanding, gained through his teaching experience, of how WAC contributes to a student's learning.

On Monday, 3/27/06, we learned that Ralph and Joan Lane had agreed to fund our proposal for the first planning semester.

On Tuesday, 3/28/06, Ralph came by and talked to Susan and Jeremy and brought a copy of his beautiful book of poetry for Jean.

On 3/29/06, the WAC Leadership team met with Instructional Technology Services (Jim Petromelli, Julie Sevastopolous, and Peter Bruni) to talk about WAC, e-portfolios, and a Center for Integrative Learning. Although initially a bit skeptical, they became enthusiastic as we explained out ideas and indicated that it would not be a problem to have e-portfolios available for our pilot classes Spring 2007. Comments by the end of the meeting: "This is what we should be doing!" "This is really what teaching should be about." See E-portfolio Questions.doc, which starting emerging at this meeting.

On 3/30/06, we met for drinks to celebrate.

On 4/3/06, we held our first official WAC Leadership team meeting to discuss next steps this semester and the general plan. See meeting notes for this and following meetings.

4/18/06 Jean sent an update in the form of meeting notes to Ralph Lane

4/21/06 Bret (LaGuardia) and Terry (Portland State University) confirmed that they will join us on July 19 here at CSM to conduct an eportfolio workshop.

4/24/06 The invitation for the First Faculty Forum went out by-email and responses started coming in. The WAC team met to discuss plans for both the forum and the eportfolio workshop.

4/26/06 The WAC team met with Kathleen, Sandra, and Juanita to discuss ways in which The Writing Center might be involved in WAC. This meeting went extremely well, with the Writing Center leads expressing enthusiasm about using the Writing Center to met the needs of WAC students. Training of all faculty involved will, of course, be very important, and the WAC team agreed to consult regularly with the Writing Center leads about configuring solutions.

5/1/06 The WAC team met again with ITS people to discuss the summer eportfolio workshop.

5/12/06 The WAC team held its First Faculty Forum, attended by 23 enthusiastic faculty members. We realized that faculty members want to be involved in many ways.

5/19/06 Plans for a summer e-portfolio workshop have been made.

5/23/06 We receive word that we have been chosen to participate in the CASTL Campus Leadership Program.
