In her sixth grade classroom, AC is required to implement a "core curriculum" provided by her district. This curriculum is provided to ensure that students meet grade level standards in the Enlish Language Arts and are prepared for frequent district and state assessments. However, AC finds it necessary to draw on a number of curricular sources to engage her particular students in subject matter that is meaningful to them and that resonates with their own lives and experiences. By drawing on her knowledge of her students and their community, AC frequently supplements elements of the core curriculum with materials and literature from other sources, making the connection to their lives explicitly in her instruction while at the same time assuring that assessment is part of the classroom culture. Included below are video segments of two lessons that are illustrative of her work to connect students' lives to the curriculum by drawing from sources beyond those which are required.
