"Revision" Teaching the Curriculum Everyday Practices
Context

School: Redwood Heights is a small comprehensive K-5 public elementary school in the Oakland Unified School District. Like all schools in Oakland, Redwood Heights is a neighborhood school with attendance drawn from the immediate residential area. The school has a strong PTA and Dad's Club as well as a city recreation center adjoining the campus. In 2003 the school received an API rating of 9, a score that has been consistent for a number of years.

Students: There are approximately 300 students enrolled with two classes at each grade level. 47% of the students identify as Caucasian, 25% as African American, 12% as Asian, 11% as Hispanic, and the remaining 5% as Southeast Asian, Native American, Filipino or Middle Eastern. Many of the students at the school receive free or reduced lunch. Hurley's class is the only combination class at the school. Her 33 fourth and fifth grade students reflect of the wider school population.
